Newcastle: St James' Park Timeline - A Visual History
3. One Of The Best
This shot demonstrates the terraces fans watched the game from.
United had only recently upgraded to this version of St James'. Back then, this was seen as one of the best stadiums in the country as it housed upwards of 60,000 fans.
A huge new stand, as you can see, was erected on the Barrack Road side of the ground and substantial terraces formed on the remaining three sides of the ground.
St James' remained largely unaltered for the next 70 years as further development plans were constantly thwarted.
