9 More Star Wars Subplots That Went Literally Nowhere

6. Anakin's Immaculate Conception

In The Phantom Menace, it's revealed by Anakin's (Jake Lloyd) mother Shmi (Pernilla August) that he was conceived without a father - a startling revelation which has basically received no concrete elaboration ever since.

Though it's often stated that the 2018 comic Darth Vader #25 confirmed that Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) used his Force powers to create Anakin in Shmi's womb, many fans have seen the comic panel without its full context.

In the comic, this is only something imagined in Anakin's mind - not an objective truth.

This was confirmed by Lucasfilm Story Group member Matt Martin, who stated that Palpatine creating Anakin was "100% not the intended implication," before the comic's writer Charles Soule added, "The Dark Side is not a reliable narrator."

And so, despite hasty claims to the contrary, we still don't know precisely how Anakin came into existence, and it doesn't seem terribly likely we're going to get a canon answer soon - if ever.
