9 More Star Wars Subplots That Went Literally Nowhere

7. "There Is Another"

In The Empire Strikes Back, Yoda (Frank Oz) memorably tells Obi-Wan's (Alec Guinness) Force ghost, "There is another," when Obi-Wan proclaims that Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) is their "last hope."

It's a bit of an odd line given that it doesn't really fully pay off in Return of the Jedi, and that's because George Lucas originally planned for Star Wars to be a six-film epic, with Yoda actually referring to Luke's unknown sister, who would be hidden across the galaxy.

Lucas initially planned to introduce Luke's sister as an entirely new character, but when it was decided to truncate the six-film plan down to a single trilogy during pre-production of Return of the Jedi, the sister was amalgamated into Leia (Carrie Fisher).

And that's why Leia and Luke have that awkward-in-retrospect kiss in Empire, in turn leaving audiences to accept that Yoda's remark was referring to Leia even when, at the time, it really wasn't.

Given that the Skywalker Saga is seemingly over for good, and the Star Wars franchise has really overdone it with the "everybody's related" shtick over the decades, it's safe to say that this original subplot is never going to be re-introduced.
