Is it a bird?

No, it’s a light aircraft pulling a banner demanding to #SaveStarTrekProdigy during the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strikes in the US, a fan campaign lead by Michele Stokes. For months Paramount had been touting a year of almost back to back Star Trek content: Picard, Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, Discovery and Prodigy but then the hammer fell.

Co-produced in association with Nickleodeon, the 20 episode first season looked to be the end of the road. However, after an extensive fan campaign on top of exhaustive work by Prodigy's creative team to find it a home, the show was saved by Netflix. The streaming service has now confirmed the arrival of that excellent first season before the end of 2023 and that the second season, which was almost completed when the cancellation was made, will be airing in 2024.

The furore around the show's surprise axing and its subsequent resurrection not only has echoes of a certain fan campaign in the 1960s but also represents the first time that a Star Trek series has moved services in its 57 year history. Indeed, the speed that season one blu-rays and DVDs shifted after the announcement was nothing short of astonishing.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
