A Spotify playlist that many Trek fans will have been chugging through over and over and over again, Subspace Rhapsody, like Those Old Scientists, could have gone so very badly wrong.

While the choice to script a musical episode may not be to everyone’s tastes, it still marks a major moment in franchise history within a show that itself has become a chance to push the boundaries of Star Trek storytelling right from the early doors of its first season. Strange New Worlds has been nothing if not explorative outside the box with The Elysium Kingdom jumping straight to mind.

Showcasing the vocal talents of the whole main cast, there were standout performances particularly from Christina Chong and Celia Rose Gooding. The reasons for the crew’s spontaneous leap into song and dance might have been a tad convoluted but it still explored the realms of first contact and Star Trek’s values while trying something completely unique in the franchise’s near 60 year history.

Being able to listen to the soundtrack on a loop thanks to the wonders of internet streaming meant that fans were able to enjoy the experience wherever they went. That is also a first for the franchise as previously episode soundtracks have been fully orchestral (such as Encounter at Farpoint or the haunting The Best of Both Worlds) while this showcased the full melodic talent aboard the Enterprise.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
