The controversial comic is better known for his sitcom appearances and often dramatic personal life than his serious acting, but he’s used well in a 1998 episode of Voyager. “Message In A Bottle” sees the crew discover an experimental warship, with Dick playing an updated version of the Voyager crew’s hologram doctor.

As is his wont, Dick delivers his lines with something of a knowing tone (unlike other unlikely guest stars, you’d guess he’s not a long time Trekkie), but his sardonic style is a benefit for an episode based heavily around his odd couple relationship with The Doctor. They bicker, ham it up, and compare hologram hardware in an innuendo laden and very fun scene. “Message In A Bottle” is effectively a two hander, and Dick and Robert Picardo (The Doctor) bounce off each other to brilliant effect.

Dick is even entrusted with the episode’s heroic conclusion, as the two hologram medics do battle with hoards of vicious Romulans. While the troubled funnyman has yet to turn his hand to this kind of work again, he makes a great case here for his ability to take on roles outside his comfort zone.
