10 Amazing TV Shows You've Probably Never Heard Of
9. Danger 5 (2011-2015)
Like Archer rewritten as a Monty Python sketch, Danger 5 is literally the greatest sixties-inspired action-espionage comic reimagining of World War II that’s ever come out of Australia - and that’s saying something.
Absurd, low budget but high concept satire of the highest order, Danger 5 was brought to the world by the creators of Italian Spider-Man, Dario Russo and David Ashby. Charged with killing Adolf Hitler, five lethal international secret agents - Tucker, Jackson, Pierre, Ilsa and Claire - must face all manner of terrifying foes, from Nazi dinosaurs to evil German shepherds to bulletproof She-Nazis, from Japanese robot super-pilots to wolf-headed assassins and, of course, time travel.
At first glance - and especially if all you watch are some of the compilations uploaded to YouTube, like the one embedded above - it doesn’t look as though the show will have much going for it aside from a little novelty value.
However the writing is surprisingly dense, with repeated, ingeniously nonsensical running gags brought in every episode: like the team’s eagle-headed employer Colonel Chestbridge's constant sexist putdowns to Claire in every episode’s briefing, or the many, many people who impart the recipe for a perfect cocktail to Pierre in their death scenes.
Season 2 inexplicably resurrects Hitler and relocates the action to a US high school in the 1980s, but it’s, if anything, even more defiantly unhinged than the first.
Available on Netflix since last year, this is a show that has to be seen to be believed.
