6. Mitty Loses Her Humanity - Made In Abyss
The series takes place in a town that surrounds a massive cavern known as the abyss. Its depths are unimaginable, and each level you descend to brings in an even more significant threat. The plot follows a young orphan girl called Riko, and her robot friend Reg as they travel down into the depths to find Riko's mother.
One of the most tragic things about this world is "the curse of the abyss". This horrifying condition occurs upon ascension, so once you go down, you're essentially dooming yourself.
During their travels, they come across a strange human/animal hybrid called Nanachi. Through flashback, you learn that she used to be a human girl with a best friend named Mitty. However, the pair were subjected to an experiment that saw them rapidly ascend, with a mechanism passing the curse from Nanachi to Mitty.
This awful experiment left Nanachi with a half-animal body but caused Mitty to suffer immeasurable pain and lose all sense of humanity, as she was converted into a thoughtless creature, incapable of even killing herself to end the suffering.
In the end, Nanachi enlists the help of Reg and Riko to put Mitty out of her misery, proving that death indeed is the better option here.
