Smith, Gillan and Darvill were a perfect TARDIS trio. All "hot" young things, they nevertheless managed to shake up the universe of Doctor Who with a bucketload of quirky charisma. Above all they brought a weird sort of grounding to the table, via Amy's bond with the Doctor and her adoration of husband Rory.

After two years of galactic gadabout'ing together, the moment finally came when they had to part. Not many of us were looking forward to it and when it happened it was in the stylish setting of New York, in a tale beset by Moffat's defining enemy, the Weeping Angels.

The genuine emotion on Gillan's face as she decides to follow Rory into potential oblivion is one of the standout moments of the Eleventh Doctor's era. I've only seen it once, and have no particular desire to revisit that fateful day in Manhattan. No-one likes the sight of a guy in his late thirties bawling into a wad of Kleenex.
