Back in Season 1, Tyrion was also facing imminent death when accused of murdering Jon Arryn and trying to assassinate Bran. He again has a trial by combat, this time with Bronn fighting for him. This fight, by the way, takes place in the Eyrie, with the terrifying “moon door” open for anyone to fall through to their death.

He starts the battle confidently by not even taking the shield that’s offered to him. He won't be needing that. It’s a truly tense fight, one of the tensest in the entire series considering that on several occasions, both men just nearly fall through the door to their death.

For a while, it seems like Bronn might be kind of screwed here, but then suddenly, he slices Ser Vardis right in the leg, knocking him over and then taking the final swing right into his neck. Tyrion gives Bronn a nod and a smile. Lady Arryn, upset, says to Bronn, “you don’t fight with honor!” Bronn shoots back, “No...he did.” What an amazing comeback.

At this point in the series, we’ve just recently met Bronn, yet he’s immediately so likable and charming, and seeing him prevail in this battle is so rewarding. Not to mention it would be the beginning of the bromance between Tyrion and Bronn, one of the great relationships of the series.
