10 Awesome Game Of Thrones Moments That Made Us Cheer

For the first few seasons, Sam is a character who’s basically the complete opposite of a badass. He’s a likable, nice guy, but he’s often kind of sad and useless. So in Season 3, when he’s cornered in the middle of the woods by a freaking White Walker, we’re all pretty much ready to mourn his loss. These are the ultimate villains of the series, so obviously Sam doesn’t stand a chance against them.

In this terrifying sequence, Sam, Gilly and the baby hear a bunch of crows going wild outside but suddenly falling silent as a White Walker approaches. The scene is genuinely terrifying, as the thing walks confidently forward making that terrible creaking sound. It tosses Sam aside, shattering his sword into pieces like nothing, and it seems like that’s just about it.

But then Sam runs forward with his dragonglass dagger, lunges it into the Walker’s back, and it roars in pain and collapses forward into pieces. Holy crap. Sam did it!

And consider the fact that at this point, Sam didn’t know for sure that dragonglass would do anything to the White Walkers. Still, he knew he had to do something, even though he easily could have escaped and left Gilly to die. No, he ran straight at the White Walker, even though all evidence suggested doing so would kill him. A true hero.
