Doctor Who can be incredibly overwhelming; explaining to someone exactly what makes the show so great can be difficult and as such its probably better to just show them instead. With 50 years of history behind it, there are plenty of episodes to choose from one of them is "The Girl in the Fireplace". Everything that is great about the show is summed up in this episode; it has hope, tragedy and an adventure in space and time. The best thing about the episode however, is its central character Reinette, also known as Madame De Pompadour. Her story is essentially a truncated version what Amy Pond's would be a few years later; she first meets The Doctor as a child who is scared of something in her room, a few minutes later The Doctor meets a fully grown Reinette who is still infatuated with the Timelord. Through Reinette we see the good and the bad of hanging with the Doctor; the joy and wonder that he brings to her life is matched by the crushing disappointment of being left behind. Through it all she remains a strong and determined woman, she builds a life for herself and like Amy Reinette finds someone to move on with. In the span of one episode we see the life Madame De Pompadour, it's perfectly executed and the epitome of Doctor Who at its best.
