Okay, so not everyone was on board with this massive shock when it first aired—in fact, this may be the single most divisive entry on this entire list, and along with the penultimate episode of HBO’s fantasy adaptation Game of Thrones, one of the most audience-splitting scenes in the last ten years of genre TV.

Nevertheless, the creators of The X-Files deserve props for the incredible commitment required by this mind-blowing moment, which rivals Twin Peaks’ infamous “see you in twenty five years” for sheer audacious ambition. The series revealed in its 2018 revival that Mulder and Scully’s child was, well, not actually their child but rather the offspring of a drugged Scully and an alien experiment.

It was a twist which was actually established in a 2000 episode of the series wherein the long-time antagonist the Cigarette Smoking Man abducts Scully and experiments on her offscreen, but the scene was long forgotten by the time this jaw-dropping revelation aired and immediately left fans both amazed and in many cases infuriated.
