If there is anything to take away from this list, it's that nothing ruins hype more than a lackluster first impression. Not even a bad first impression, but if the first several episodes don't hook you, why should you devote your time to watching more with the hope of it getting better?

To an extent, the Steven Universe fandom is aware of this, which is why when they talk about the best episodes, across the board, you'll notice that most of the episodes from season 1 are conspicuously absent. Steven Universe takes 24 episodes - 12 episodes comprised of two ten minute long episodes - to actually start getting interesting, or really any good to be honest. Before then it's just a weird story about a kinda annoying kid who raps about ice cream cats and occasionally they'll fight a monster.

The minute Lapis Lazuli shows up, it's like the show has suddenly woken up from a stupor and remembered "oh yeah I'm supposed to be awesome" and then proceeds to be just that.

The 3 episode rule is flawed but it's there for a reason. It's not even that the episodes preceding that point are terrible, they just feel like they have no reason to exist. Only one or two are ever brought up again, so there's no reason the episodes couldn't have been structured better.
