10 Awesome TV Shows Whose Hype Totally Backfired!
1. Rick And Morty
There is no question what awesome show has been irreparably crippled by its own hype and fandom than Rick And Morty. Shock of all shocks, a show that drove people to harass McDonald's employees has a bit of a hype problem.
Fandom shouldn't play a part in our enjoyment of a show, nor should the hype that surrounds said show, but the fact is that it does, because humans are influenced by the world that surrounds them. Anyone watching the show for the first time nowadays is going to know Rick And Morty going in as that show where all the memes come from and where all the people who think they're smarter than everyone else gather together in worship.
Watching folks willingly miss the point en masse of the Pickle Rick episode, and the character of Rick Sanchez in particular, can also turn people off from the show. Doesn't help that the show isn't as good at demonizing Rick's actions as it thinks it is. All the parts of the show that are meant to be "the point" aren't analyzed properly enough for some people, and all they see is an excuse for bad writing. Because the bad first impression was made before they even watched it.
This show is at the top not just because people were built up so much that it could only disappoint them. It's also here because that hype - and the form of behavior that it took - has begun to circle back around and turn into the cause of its own backlash.
