2. The Marvelous Mrs Maisel
Before The Marvelous Mrs Maisel came along it would be fair to say that not many people thought about the world of a female comic in the late 1950s, but when it did debut, a whole new world opened up on the screen. One that showed something that felt important and overlooked.
It turns out that the life of a female stand-up during the late '50s was something that had been missing from the world, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel is a wonderfully crafted series about pre-feminism and the breaking out of societal gender roles.
As Midge makes her way in a male-dominated and risky industry, she is inundated from all sides by raising a young family, her cheating husband, and crazy amount of dresses. However, with her manager Susie by her side, together they begin to make a dent in the world that would come to be a shattering of glass that women have always been held under.
Seeing some real historical characters such as Lenny Bruce is another reason why you end up so immersed in the show's colour and detailed recreation of the era. Whomever you are, wherever you're from, it is hard not to get sucked in by Mrs Maisel and her cohorts. Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Borstein lead the way in this unexpectedly phenomenal series.
