Imagine a prison that also doubles as an amusement park. A prison where inmates are sentenced to death and injected with a lethal poison but can stay their execution by earning a temporary antidote every 3 days if they agree to ‘perform’ for the park visitors. Welcome to Deadman Wonderland, Japan’s state of the art penitentiary.

Deadman Wonderland opens with a massacre, and continues to cover the screen in crimson throughout. Inmates are forced to perform violent acts in a blood-thirsty fight club known only as the Carnival of Corpses, to please the perverse audience that pays to see them. If the inmate loses but does not die, he or she has their limbs removed in the name of science. If the inmate wins, well, let’s just say they probably wish that they had died.

The manga, and ultimately the anime, were both banned in China due to the graphic nature of both. Deadman Wonderland has been called excessive by critics but for those who manage to sit through the whole thing without puking it’s a powerful allegory for the mess humanity has made of things, and their refusal to accept the consequences.
