10 Best Animated Sci-Fi TV Shows Of All Time
4. Neon Genesis Evangelion
Neon Genesis Evangelion effortlessly meshes several different genres and themes together, without the tone ever feeling clunky or inconsistent.
Set in the year 2015, the main premise focuses on Shinji Ikrai - a young teenager who is summoned by his father to pilot the EVA-01 robot, in order to save Earth from the attacking monsters. It starts off as a 'save-the-world' type of plot but slowly ushers in more multi-dimensional characters and harrowing drama.
The futuristic depiction of planet Earth is fully realised and a great backdrop amidst the lively fight sequences and stunning imagery. As the series progresses, Shinji's character is greater developed as the story explores his struggles with loneliness, perhaps attributed to his abandonment as a child.
It's been almost twenty five years on, and the ending still remains a divisive aspect of the series which has still left fans pondering over what the conclusion truly means. Nevertheless, the bulk of Neon Genesis Evangelion remains intelligent, engaging, action-packed and always re-watchable.
