5. Carole and Tuesday
Ever since Cowboy Bebop, director Shinichiro Watanabe has been the rockstar of the western anime world right next to Mamoru Hosoda and Hayao Miyazaki. The man's love of different cultures, progressive politics and world weary but still likable character writing has made him a beloved household name. And Carole and Tuesday is yet another example of his genius.
Like a lot of Watanabe's work, the story is a familiar premise but given a densely detailed sci-fi twist that sends it in interesting directions. The show centers around two young girls living on terraformed Mars, who want to make it big in the music business. While the story takes similar directions to stories with this same premise, the futuristic twist and little tweaks to the formula make it very much its own beast.
From Watanabe's usual dry yet crass sense of humor coming out in legendary ways (there's a whole song that's JUST a line of women singing nothing but curse words) to his social commentary taking its most biting and accusatory form yet, Carole and Tuesday mostly tries to be a fun time, but like the rest of its director's work, will hit you hard and fast when you least expect it.
