8. The Olympic Carrier's Destruction
The destruction of the luxury liner the Olympic Carrier is one of the earliest moments of darkness faced by the fleet of surviving humans. This incident was part of the official first episode of Battlestar Galactica following the mini-series, and as such really shows how high the stakes can get for the show, as well as giving the show a clear difference from the original series.
After a nearly endless cycle of Cylon attacks on the fleet every 33 minutes the fleet was beginning to wear itself thin and accidentally left behind the luxury liner, Olympic Carrier, during an attack.
The loss of the Olympic Carrier was hard enough, though the Cylons seemed to stop their attacks after the loss of the liner which may have meant that the ship was being tracked after every jump, though it is never explicitly made clear.
The Olympic Carrier reappeared, grateful to be back with the fleet. But the ship ended up appearing empty and was also giving off radiation warnings, meaning the ship had become a nuclear bomb.
