10 Best Battlestar Galactica Moments
4. Discovering Earth
Earth is well known to us as it is our homeworld, our place of origin in the ever-expanding universe. But for the crew of the Galactica as well as the tens of thousands of surviving humans, Earth was a legendary planet. The one true hope for humanity's survival. A world untouched by the Cylons, perfect to begin a new human civilization and the most important thing in the deep void of space, hope.
And somehow, someway, the people of the original twelve colonies found their long lost thirteenth colony, the first Earth. Shockingly, the people of Earth had undergone the exact same strife as the other colonies. They too had created their own advanced cybernetic AI technologies.
And that technology rebelled as well, leading to yet another human-robot war which seemingly ended with worldwide nuclear warfare. The war completely eliminated both sides and irradiated the planet making it uninhabitable for thousands of years. The human refugees in the fleet and the Galactica could not even try to recolonize the planet.
This revelation that the very thing that gave people hope, that started the Galactica's long journey into uncharted space, was all a lie. This led to a massive wave of grief, loss, and even suicides for both humans and Cylon rebels.
The discovery of the first Earth was meant to be a happy moment in the show, and somehow it became one of its darkest moments and ultimately another lesson for humanity about the dangers of creating AI in the pursuit of making life easier.
