10 Best Battlestar Galactica Moments

2. Starbuck's "Death"

Battlestar Galactica
Universal

Kara Thrace aka Starbuck has always been a bit of a psycho. Her reckless flying and aggressive behavior with her fellow survivors has been apparent ever since the first episode. Yet ultimately her charm and strength against adversity from Cylon and Human threats earned her respect from the fans and the rest of humanity.

But Starbuck's journey reached a shockingly quick end when the survivors flew by a gas giant that strangely resembled Kara's painting she made when she was a child.

As more and more strange things began happening to Starbuck, such as imagining a fight with a Cylon Raider and an "avatar" that looks a lot like Leoben who talked with Kara about her mother's death.

Kara spends so long talking with this avatar her ship ends up being dragged deeper into the gas giant and closer to imploding as Kara realizes the avatar is not Leoben, but something else.

Then for some reason that isn't quite clear, Kara allows herself to die, her ship imploding in a ball of fire as Lee Adama watched in horror.

While Starbuck comes back as some sort of angel that leads humanity to our Earth, her death was shocking and emotional, a big moment for the series and many of its main characters.
