10 Best Character Arcs In Shows Produced By Michael Schur
7. April Ludgate – Parks And Recreation
If you’re already bored reading this sentence, you might be April Ludgate. The apathetic teenage intern grows into one of the most caring characters on television. She took the job because she had nothing better to do, and she stayed on board for the same reason. She seems to hate everyone, and we love her for it.
As Parks and Recreation progresses, we see the reluctant April open herself up to a loving relationship with Andy Dwyer. Within a few short months, they get married. In the development of her marriage, we see that April is an incredibly loyal person to those close to her.
She sheds off her apathy and hate, and in doing so she can be a better friend and mentee, and she finally decides to stop working for Leslie Knope to pursue her own career. April wholeheartedly struggles with quitting her job, knowing how hard it will be on Leslie. The old April would have left without hesitation. Seeing her gain the ability to engage in empathy is a satisfying development.
Not only do we see her become a caring person, but April makes other characters better. Her husband becomes a successful television star, she makes Ron’s life better when she becomes his assistant, and she even comforts Ann Perkins, who she hates, when she doubts her ability to raise a child. The person who claims to hate everyone seems to care about a lot of people.
