10 Best Doctor Who Big Finish Releases

Doctor Who Big Finish
BBC / Big Finish

A new, darker era for Paul McGann's Doctor. The Eighth Doctor Adventure range ends with such tragedy and heartbreak – which you should hear for yourself. With absolutely no hope left after THAT season finale, The Doctor goes to the end of the universe, before being stopped by the Time Lords and entrusted with Molly O’Sullivan, his new companion from the series. Ruth Bradley plays an Irish nurse during World War One, who's character is very important to the storyline.

Nicholas Briggs, who writes the entirety of this set, crafts a beautiful start to this new range which brought new life to McGann’s incarnation, and went on to win the ‘Best Online Audio Drama’ of 2014. It seems quite fitting that one of the Daleks' best writers is the man who voices them.

With a new outfit and screwdriver, Paul McGann takes his incarnation to the next level. Over the course of the following four box-sets, the Doctor confronts the Dalek Time Controller, the Eminence, and a new incarnation of the Master, played by the delightful Alex Macqueen.

Nick Briggs has crafted a terrific new era, which leads to, currently, another three series: 'Doom Coalition', 'Ravenous' and the soon to begin 'Stranded'. Filled with well-rounded characters and worlds, ‘Dark Eyes 1’ begins a new journey for the Eighth Doctor and the Daleks before the Time War kicks off. Although the full story takes place across all four box-sets, the first ‘Dark Eyes’ box-set was originally released stand-alone. ‘Dark Eyes 1’ maybe a straightforward “Daleks pursue the Doctor” story, but even nearly eight years on, its emotional core and theme of hope is what sets it up above the rest. This story is one of the best Big Finish has to offer, and one any Doctor Who fan could enjoy.

Big Finish has such a range of stories, that there is absolutely something for everyone. From the writing to sound design, every month they produce some of the greatest audios out there. Every story mentioned would be perfect for first time listeners.
