Before returning as showrunner, RTD admitted that he wished he’d done more classic series sequels in his first era.

And in his second era, he fully made up for that regret.

The Legend of Ruby Sunday and Empire of Death was of course a sequel to the Fourth Doctor classic Pyramids of Mars, but not just content with building off the events of the original story, Russell decided to give it the red carpet treatment.

Rather than a simple repeat, we got a whole new edit of Pyramids of Mars in the form of a secret seventh episode of Tales of the TARDIS, with new bookending scenes from Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson and updated special effects – including a new time tunnel and the removal of the infamous “Hand of Sutekh”.

A special mention must also go to The War Games, which received a colourisation this year with various exciting additions, from hints that the War Chief was in fact the Master, to a proper regeneration scene for the Second Doctor.

Seeing these old favourites being enjoyed by new fans decades on from their original broadcasts was a true delight, and speaks to how timeless this show truly is.
