While technically billed as a comedy, Orange is the New Black has never shied away from laying on the drama. The third season moved away from having a main antagonist like the first two seasons, and focused more on the everyday lives of the prisoners and how they coped with their changing surroundings. Realizing how strong the supporting cast was, the showrunners decided to move away from Piper Chapman (played by Taylor Schilling) as the main protagonist, and moved towards more of an ensemble cast, giving characters like Poussey (played by Samira Wiley), Daya Diaz (Dascha Polanco), and Pennsatucky (Taryn Manning) more screen time. And it's Manning's performance as Pennsatucky that is the real gem of the season. Given more material to work with, including another flashback episode, Manning knocks it out of the park and adds incredible depth to a character that in previous seasons was incredibly one-dimensional.
