Often times a fish out of water story is a reward to viewers for getting to know the characters. Changing the setting can be refreshing and adding comedy can often work a treat. It can also go down like a lead balloon, but you take the risks where and when you can. Star Trek IV: The One With The Whales is simply iconic, not only in the franchise, but in cinema in general.

The film is packed with quotable moments, though the heart that runs through the piece is one of its true strengths. There are certainly a lot of scenes that reward viewers for having seen earlier Trek (Grace Lee Whitney and Majel Barrett cameos included) but if one were to take this as a stand-alone piece of 80s SciFi comedy, it arguably works. Of course, we don't want it to be stand-alone - that's the point, we want you to keep watching!

Star Trek IV hooks the viewer with a light tone, a heavy message, and a fantastic execution. It lacks the depth of Star Trek II or the campy tone of Star Trek V, but instead invites the viewer to just accept that these are space men and women thrown back to a simpler time.

Honestly, if the scene in the truck doesn't hook you, we worry for you. We worry.
