Star Trek: Discovery's second season was the first of several soft-reboots that the show went through during its run. The opening season was quite dark, with the sophomore year taking a largely lighter tone. The opening episode of the season sees the Discovery dealing with the arrival of the Enterprise. While there is certainly rather a lot of knowing looks that benefit from a bit of franchise knowledge, everything is dealt out rather nicely.

Tig Notaro joins the cast as Jett Reno, offering not only a bit of context for the devastating Klingon War that occurred the previous year, but bringing a sense of humour that the first season lacked. For newcomers, they are treated to a cast very familiar with each other (the camaraderie between Doug Jones and Sonequa Martin-Green is obvious) as well as meeting Anson Mount's Pike, who shines throughout the hour.

There is enough of a mystery to grab viewers' attentions, while Pike delivers the necessary exposition to really kick the season into gear. Burnham's voice over provides a bit more of the backstory, with everything combining to offer a new starting point for the show. It may be the second season, but its a first rate beginning.
