10 Best Episodes Of Prematurely Cancelled TV Shows
1. Out Of Gas - Firefly
Firefly is like the poster child for prematurely cancelled shows. It’s probably the most famous and best received show to only have one season, with many of its cast (Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Summer Glau, Christina Hendricks...) going on to hugely successful careers afterwards.
That’s not to mention showrunner Joss Whedon, who’s making his second appearance on this list after Dollhouse.
Similar to Cowboy Bebob, Firefly eschewed the typically grandiose themes and plots of sci-fi giants Star Wars and Star Trek to focus on more intimate, character driven narratives.
Despite only putting out 14 episodes during its short but legendary run, there’s still a huge amount of gems to choose from when it comes to Firefly’s best episode. In the end, Out Of Gas won out, although Ariel, Objects In Space, Trash, Our Mrs Reynolds and some others had a claim too.
Out Of Gas is a flashback episode, which is usually a marker of lower quality, but not here. It shows us Mal ordering the crew to leave the ship to safety amidst disaster, while he stays behind to try and fix things. While he awaits rescue, he remembers how each of the crew joined the Serenity.
