4. Discos & Dragons - Freaks & Geeks
Freaks & Geeks only ran for 18 episodes but has lived on with cult status in infamy for being cancelled so early. It follows the tales of an overachieving mathlete who falls in with a gang of burnouts and her geeky younger brother, both trying to navigate through high school.
It helped launch the careers of James Franco, Lisa Cardellini, John Francis Daley, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Samm Levine, Martin Starr and Busy Phillips; it’s hard to think of any sitcom anywhere having such a stacked cast.
The fact they only wrung 18 episodes out of them feels grossly unfair.
Of those, it’s the finale Discos & Dragons which just edges it as their best episode ever. It wasn’t designed to be the ultimate finale, just the ending of Season 1 before the never to arrive Season 2 appeared. However, it ended up being a poignantly fitting end, and if it had to finish, this was at least a great way to do it.
It sees the geeks playing Dungeons & Dragons with Daniel; James Franco’s character and the coolest of the freaks. Bringing both groups together at last feels like a good ending for one of the best one season wonders ever.
