10 Best Final Seasons In TV History

4. The Wire (Season 5)

The Wire McNulty Dominic West
HBO

For five years, the quality of The Wire never waned.

Quite possibly the most realistic show on this list, the Baltimore-set police drama focused on a number of social and political storylines over it's five season run, with the finale taking a look at print news and its effect on society.

It was a tough topic to take on even with the show's track record, but they certainly pulled it off, with the key figures of Baltimore society exploring the media quest for profit, a decline in news quality, and the dysfunctional attitude of journalists in the community. It also provided a fitting end for Dominic West's Jimmy McNulty as he retires from the police department.

When the content of a show is grounded with realism in the modern world, it doesn't get much more hard-hitting than this, and the show bows out on top as a result.
