8. Davos And Shireen
As with Sam and Gilly, Davos and Shireen’s relationship brought some much-needed softness to Game of Thrones to offset the overall grim tone.
Shireen naturally drew sympathy from watchers of the show due to her physical disfigurement and her affectionate persona. Though Davos had quite a brash exterior, his time with Shireen exemplified the paternal side of his character. Indeed, the scenes in which Shireen taught Davos to read and write were some of the warmest moments in the show.
Such moments made Shireen’s death in the penultimate episode of Season 5 all the more tragic. Shireen may not have been a primary character, but her death had plenty of emotional weight behind it due to her innocent and caring nature.
However, it’s a shame that Davos was not able to avenge her by killing Melisandre. It would have been a dark yet satisfying way for him to find closure after the loss of his friend.
