10 Best Jobs Homer Simpson Has Ever Had

9. Sanitation Commissioner

Homer Simpson Sanitation Commissioner
Fox

Homer became sanitation commissioner in the show’s 200th episode, Trash Of The Titans. U2 tends to be the most talked about celebrity cameo of the episode, but it’s actually comedy legend Steve Martin who strikes up the best dynamic with Homer.

Playing incumbent sanitation commissioner Ray Patterson, Martin and Homer battle it out for the job after Homer’s angry rant at the garbage men sees him blacklisted for service. Homer winds up getting the position after a blistering campaign, where he mocks Patterson, promises round the clock garbage service and sings through the streets in a parade.

Once he’s appointed, he obviously fails to deliver on his magnificent promises. Blowing the entire monthly budget in a year, Homer is left with no garbage men and no ideas. Most of the episode revolves around his election, but without a doubt the best moment is when Patterson is asked to come back, only to make a short, satisfying speech refusing the position to leave the town to fix their own mess.

Homer eventually solves the problem by selling off landfill space to other cities, but this predictably backfires too. To solve everything, they just move the town five miles down the road.
