10 Best League Of Gentlemen Characters
6. Dr. Matthew Chinnery
"Was he an old dog?"
Sometimes people with the best of intentions just make matters worse, and for resident vet Dr. Chinnery, even his soft voice and polite nature couldn't stop us from covering our eyes and mouths in astonishment at how quickly a "simple procedure" went from bad to worse.
He was like an angel of death. As soon as he appeared on screen and politely assured his patients' handlers that their pets were in safe hands, we knew it was assuredly the opposite. Despite concerns from the townsfolk of Royston Vasey that their pets were their pride and joy, and extra care should be taken, Chinnery couldn't help but make bloody messes of their prized pups, frogs, turtles, cows - basically anything that walked on four legs.
Mark Gatiss' soft and gentle voice worked perfectly as the character, and while Shearsmith and Pemberton are great in their own right, they wouldn't be the right fit for such a character. Chinnery was a character you might be inclined to call a protagonist, given his good nature and intentions, but since all his operations ended in bloodshed, you can't help but think a small part of him was doing all of this deliberately.
