10 Best League Of Gentlemen Characters
4. Hilary Briss
A quick theory about Royston Vasey: the town itself is Hell, and everyone occupying it is either dead or a demon. If that were true, then there must be a Devil ruling Royston Vasey somewhere? Who better than the sinister town butcher, Hilary Briss?
Without even divulging into what the "Special Stuff" could have been made of, Hilary Briss' presence in the show was a disturbing and darkly humorous one.
A true antagonist within the series - he got powerful figures addicted to his choice meat, and unwittingly became the architect of the killer nosebleed epidemic of the second series.
When facing the public, he was the friendly butcher we'd trust to give us the best Cumberland around. But within his inner circle, and he was the puppet-master of something far more sinister than out of date sirloins.
The mutton chops, teeth-tonguing and hushed voice of the character made him almost cartoonish, and Mark Gatiss thrived as the vile and (as we learn the identity of his wife) deviant butcher of the town.
The persona Gastiss brought to Briss transcended across BBC shows - with his performance as Mr. Snow in Being Human, and even Mycroft Homes in the Sherlock series, echo some strides and personality we originally saw in Briss.
