The Doctor and Rose arrive in Scotland, where they come across Queen Victoria and her armed guard. It turns out that an attempt on the Queen's life has driven her to seek shelter at Torchwood House, an isolated manor owned by an old friend. The Doctor and Rose are invited along to stay the night, but it soon becomes apparent that the house has been commandeered and that the Queen is in danger. This episode is a fun monster romp, with some unexpected martial arts action from a group of monks. The explanation for the werewolf is excellent, and Queen Victoria is a fantastic character that plays off the Doctor nicely. Fans of the classic series meanwhile, might recognise the name the Doctor gives when introducing himself to the Queen’s guards – James McCrimmon. A subtle reference to his former companion Jamie.
