1899, as the name implies, is set in 1899. The show is from the creators of the critically acclaimed Netflix series Dark so expectations were pretty darn high. While the show may not have hit the lofty heights of its predecessor, it certainly struck a chord with plenty of people. The series follows a group of European emigrants sailing to New York from Southampton in the UK on a ship called Kerberos. Of course, everything goes awry by way of some Black Mirror and Lost-esque supernatural shenanigans.

The show was praised for its atmosphere, tension, and fascinating themes but was criticised for being too obscure for some viewers.

Though some preferred the focus on worldbuilding and the core mystery to unravel, other critics took issue with the slow pacing and heavy lean into its distorted reality. Overall, the show was lauded for its ambition, achieving a certified fresh rating of 76% on Rotten Tomatoes which is impressive for a mystery thriller just getting off the ground. Despite retaining 3 weeks as the number 2 top English TV show on Netflix, in January 2023 it was announced the show would not be renewed.

Though a dedicated fanbase have rallied against the decision with a Change.org petition currently sitting at over 90,000 signatures, so fingers crossed we might have a Sense8 situation on our hands.
