Series 7 Episode 5: Seasonal Beatings

Suddenly everything about Mark Corrigan makes sense. For seven series', we as an audience have heard Mark's inner monologues and asked ourselves "who hurt you, Mark?". Well, now we can put a name and a face to that culprit.

While Peep Show has always made Jeff out to be Mark's nemesis, it turns out his own father might be the true enemy. From the jump, Dan is an antagonistic figure who can't help but pick apart everything and everyone around him. Not a single line he says in the episode is a pleasant one, with his vitriol being spewed at Mark and Dobby especially.

Throughout the episode, taking place entirely within Christmas Day, Dan attempts to mock and humiliate those around him - sometimes for his own amusement. That isn't to say there are comedic beats, and his hostile chemistry with Mark make for great moments as they discuss the manliness of a shredder, or whether cauliflower is a traditional Christmas accompaniment.

Dan is the catalyst of the Christmas episode, and takes a lion's share of the credit for why the episode is so memorable. And while he may not be a violent man, the rising tension in the episode reaches a very unique boiling point - which ends almost bittersweet as Mark claims victory over his father, but batters his relationship with Dobby in the process.

I overthink a lot of things. Will talk about pretty much anything for a great length of time. I'm obsessed with General Slocum from the 2002 Spider-Man film. I have questions that were never answered in that entire trilogy!
