10 Best One Season Wonder TV Shows

7. Action

Free Agents
Fox

The acidic, insider Hollywood comedy with cameos from stars sending up their own public image feels a familiar genre these days, but when Action debuted in 1999, there was really only The Larry Sanders Show to have done so effectively in recent small screen memory.

This Jay Mohr-starring sitcom bites the hand that feeds like few shows of its ilk, a Hollywood sitcom in which every last mover and shaker is corrupt, stupid, cruel, or (often) all of the above. Mohr parlays his slick persona brilliantly in his portrayal of Peter Dragon, a producer of schlock whose swift rise seems primed to be followed by a precipitous fall.

A bully and a cad, Dragon is no doubt based on any number of famous behind the scenes coves, and the supporting cast is no better, comprised of bigwigging execs, power mad performers, quivering underlings, and desperate wannabes.

Fox swiftly lost confidence in Action, declining to broadcast five of its episodes. Most likely it was ahead of its time - the scumbag protagonist and sitcom cast of rotters is far more popular a proposition these days.
