10 Best One Season Wonder TV Shows

6. Terriers

Fox 21

This one still both stings and makes little sense. Broadcast on basic cable heavyweight FX, Terriers was, appropriately enough, a shaggy dog story of a detective show, starring Donal Logue and Michael Raymond-James as, respectively, an ex-cop and an ex-con now operating as private detectives in an upper crust California town.

A highlight of the modern trend for melancholic dramedies, Terriers combined loose but engaging storytelling with some of the most lived-in feeling relationships in recent TV history. Logue and Raymond-James had unsurpassed chemistry; you’d be more than happy to watch them simply cruising their beach town, but the plots were superb too, with cases of the week intersecting nicely with a larger story.

Terriers had a patience and confidence lacking from most new shows - these were complex characters whose backstories and flaws were drawn out gradually and gracefully.

The first season weaves an incredibly engaging narrative and leaves things off on an uncertain, but satisfying, note - all the same, there was a lot more life left in this dog, and one can only wonder what could have been had the world been explored further.
