4. The Day The World Went Away
An understandable mistake on Finch's part set a terrible chain of events in motion, as Elias and Root sacrificed themselves out of love and loyalty to protect him from Samaritan. Elias' poignant ending set a high standard, as the former crime lord proved a true hero, thwarting the hostile ASI’s assets through his ingenuity until its virtually limitless intelligence and resources overwhelmed him.
However, the episode's most terrible loss was undoubtedly that of Root, who went out like a lioness after powerful final scenes with Shaw and Finch (which featured some of the show's greatest lines), and an absolutely thrilling action sequence involving an armoured car and a hair scrunchie. The scene in which a broken, traumatised Finch finally abandoned his rules and promised to kill Samaritan was truly disturbing, not to mention perfectly performed by Michael Emerson.
As the song that shared its name began to play, The Day the World Went Away concluded with the painful sight of Root’s body on a slab, the Machine adopting her voice, and Reese and Shaw realising that Samaritan’s efforts to capture Finch alive meant that Finch’s number had come up as a perpetrator. The darkness inside Finch seen by Elias had been released, and the show was sent hurtling towards its endgame.
