Defiance was a short-lived post-apocalypse western series that premiered on SyFy in 2013. The series ran for a total of three seasons consisting of 38 episodes before it was canceled in 2015. Defiance was somewhat different from most science-fiction that is set in a post-apocalyptic world, and it filled an interesting niche in the genre.

In Defiance, the world was radically altered by alien terraforming technology, which was used by a race of aliens called the Voltans. Their tech altered the landscape, flora, and fauna of Earth, transforming it into an amalgamation of their homeworld and ours.

The resulting landscape was barely recognizable as Earth, and the emergence of new species made survival something of an adventure. The story begins in the year 2046, and humans are no longer the only sentient species on the planet, as it is inhabited by several alien species who live and work together — sometimes.

Unfortunately, SyFy opted to cancel Defiance before it was able to really get off the ground, but there is a companion video game, which was released in 2013. While the television show may be over, Trion Worlds continues to update the game with new content, even going so far as to make it free-to-play in 2014.
