7. The Last Ship

The Last Ship is a post-apocalypse action/drama series that aired on TNT from 2014 until 2018. There were five seasons consisting of 56 episodes, making The Last Ship one of the few shows in the genre that was able to come to a natural conclusion.

The series is loosely based on the William Brinkley novel of the same name, and it takes place after a virus wipes out more than 80% of the world's population. One ship, the USS Nathan James, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, remained unaffected by the virus, leaving it up to the crew to find a cure and save the world.

Only 218 people were aboard the so-called "last ship" when the pandemic hit, and while the series focused a lot of attention on the people aboard, it didn't shy away from some serious action sequences. Of course, this might have something to do with the fact that Michael Bay was one of the executive producers.

Overall, The Last Ship managed to tell an action-packed story with exceptional characters in a plausible narrative. Such a pandemic remains possible, which helps to ground the series as a more realistic option than most of the other shows on this list.
