In the world of anime, there are tons of stories set in a post-apocalyptic world, and many of them are exceptional, but if only one anime series was able to make it onto this list, it would have to be Attack on Titan. The series is based on the manga of the same name written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama.

In the world of Attack on Titan, humanity has been driven to near-extinction, and only lives within enormous walled cities, which are connected to one another to form a single nation. On the outside of the walls are Titans, which are enlarged and gruesome humanoid giants who eat people.

Life within the walls was quite lovely up until a Colossal Titan managed to breach them, resulting in an invasion humanity was ill-equipped to stop. The series is based primarily around Eren Yeager and his friends Mikasa Ackerman and Armin Arlert, all of whom are members of the elite Survey Corps.

Their job is to kill Titans, and to do so, they require highly-specialized equipment, but Eren has an ability that makes fighting the Titans a bit easier. Of course, this opens the story to reveal a number of mysteries, each more compelling than the last!

Attack on Titan was adapted into three seasons, which ran between April 2013 and April 2019 for a total of 59 episodes and eight OVAs.
