Without a shadow of the doubt, Douglas Adams' science fiction comedy property is the benchmark for the genre. It all started with The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy which detailed the adventures of the Arthur Dent. Possibly the last surviving human, he travels the galaxy with group of ludicrous beings that include an incredibly depressed robot.

It all started as a series of radio comedies broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 1978, but most people are familiar with the perpetually popular novels. BBC also produced an iconic six episode TV version of the radio series in 1981 using many of the same actors. The second TV series unfortunately never happened.

A movie was released in 2005, though it wasn't particularly well received by fans of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It lost much of the whimsy and fun that the BBC TV series successfully captured. Hulu is reputedly working on a new TV adaptation which will hopefully be more successful.
