4. Mystery Science Theater 3000

If you're an evil scientist that wants to test the limits of human sanity, there's only one logical course of action. Take a test subject, trap them on a space station and force them to watch terrible science fiction movies until that person finally goes insane. What that information gets used for is perplexing at best, but the ride is sure fun.

This is the core plot of Mystery Science Theater 3000, which has had different iterations on air since 1988. While the test subject and the mad scientist have changed over the years, the premise hasn't. Each test subject on the Satellite of Love has survived by openly mocking each of the movies and shows they've been forced to watch.

At their sides have been two Bots named Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot. They help mock the movies, and do a superb job of it. Two other robots are also on the station, though they don't get involved in slamming the films. MST3K holds a key place in the legacy of the science fiction genre as it points out everything wrong in the classic tropes that encompass it.
