4. Star Trek: Picard
The Star Trek franchise is one of the largest science fiction properties in the history of TV, and viewers are certainly spoiled for choice when it comes to indulging in the joys of the property. 2020 saw two major Trek projects in the forms of the third season of Netflix's Star Trek: Discovery and Amazon Prime's debuting Star Trek: Picard. While Discovery certainly has its charm, the title is overall a little uneven. But Picard manages to delve back into the Next Generations continuity without spoiling any nostalgia.
The series continues the legacy of Jean-Luc Picard and does justice to the character. It also introduces new roles to the universe and brings back familiar favourites in a satisfying way. The title had a lot to live up to, as the legacy left behind by Next Generation was immense, and the messy Star Trek: Nemesis left a sour taste in the mouths of fans.
While it isn't perfect, as it is often unsubtle and can lead a little too hard into nostalgic territory, nostalgia is why viewers are there, so why not indulge a little? Fans can look forward to more of this show, as the inaugural season was one of the year's best.
