Over the years, as Netflix gained dominance in the world of TV entertainment, the streaming service slowly began to release original international series. Shows such as Narcos (2015), set in Columbia and Mexico, and Spanish series Money Heist (2017) have become massive hits and gained huge worldwide popularity. Lesser known shows like Denmark's The Rain (2017) and South Korea's Kingdom (2019) have amassed a smaller cult following.

But the pick of the bunch, and easily the best, most confusing sci-fi show over the past decade, is Germany's 2017 thriller Dark.

Trying to fully understand Dark is a near impossible task without watching countless explanation videos. Set in a small fictional town in Germany, it follows the intertwined lives of four families across multiple generations as their family trees become twisted by time travel.

Characters meet their past and future selves as the history of this town is slowly revealed. If you're invested enough to complete all three seasons of the show, you'll be rewarded with one of the most intricate and exceptionally written sci-fi shows in decades.

Every small detail, from the very first episode, has a later meaning in the show. The writers have ensured that every scene and every beat play an important role in the greater picture.

Dark is a truly mind-blowing piece of sci-fi television, and one that deserves every plaudit.
