10 Best Sci-Fi TV Shows Of The 2010s
7. The Leftovers
Based on the 2011 novel by Tom Perrotta, The Leftovers is the most exhaustively emotional show on this list, and possibly ever. It's also the show with the least amount of visible science-fiction elements on this list.
First airing in 2014, The Leftovers begins with a harrowing event named the 'Sudden Departure.' Two percentage (140 million) of the world's population suddenly vanish without an explanation, and the show focuses on those loved ones left behind on earth.
The show mainly follows Chief of Police Kevin Garvey, played by Justin Theroux, who struggles to control his town while keeping his family safe. The series is a slow paced look at the results of grief as each episode highlights a different character's journey.
However, certain episodes across its three seasons does heavily include supernatural science-fiction elements as Kevin Garvey consistently travels to the afterlife on completely absurd missions.
The Lfestovers has been favourably compared to Lost, which seems fitting considering both shows are created by Damon Lindelof. Unfortunately, The Leftovers received average viewer ratings despite being highly acclaimed. Over the years the show has amassed a cult following with many critics referring to it as one of the greatest shows of all time.
