10 Best Sci-Fi TV Shows Of The 2010s
3. Black Mirror
Black Mirror has gone from forgotten Channel 4 show to Netflix sensation. An anthology series that examines the dangers of new and fictional technologies, Black Mirror paints a bleak, dystopian future that aims to scare us more than excite us.
First airing in 2011 on Channel 4, Black Mirror was limited by a restricted budget and the new technology presented was rather subtle and more character driven. The Channel 4 era of the show lasted for two seasons and had controversial episodes such as 'The National Anthem', which includes that famous scene between the Prime Minister and a pig, and the episode 'White Bear', depicting a society that humiliates criminals.
However, Black Mirror never reached worldwide fame until it was bought by Netflix in 2015. Netflix increased the show's budget, allowing Charlie Brooker, series writer, to expanded his ideas.
With the dominance of Netflix, the show was able to attract more well-known actors for stand-alone episodes. Hollywood actors such as Bryce Dallas Howard, Anthony Mackie, and Miley Cyrus have all recently starred in the show.
The best episodes of the Netflix era include 'San Junipero', depicting a relationship cherished in memory by technology, and the episode 'USS Callister' about a man creating his own Star Trek style fantasy.
